Foothills Honey Company owns around 5,000 colonies of honeybees. At any given time, they are spread around the Pacific Northwest and Northern California.

The Challenges of Beekeeping

Keeping bees alive in the world of modern agriculture is a difficult task, as honeybees face a variety of challenges on a daily basis. Increased travel of hives, exotic mites from the Far East, exposure to pesticides and a host of other debilitating factors make careful care in beekeeping a must.

The most recent challenge facing bees in North America is Colony Collapse Disorder. Simply put, CCD causes colonies to disappear, leaving empty hives without the usual telltale piles of dead bees that can be found following the demise of a colony for other reasons. A variety of institutions currently are carrying out research on CCD around the country.
